Ethics & Conduct

"PLAYER FIRST,
SKILLS DEVELOPMENT SECOND,
SPORTSMANSHIP & RESPECT THIRD,
 WINNING FOURTH"

The direction of the Kingston International Youth Hockey/Sports Festival encourages coaches, team managers, parents, friends, and others to read the following ethics rules and tips below that will help to:

  • Enhance a good and positive atmosphere during this hockey festival; and

  • Encourage proper conduct and demonstrate good behavior to hockey prospects that you are coaching/supervising in this tournament.

20 Ways to be a Great Hockey Parent/Coach/Manager/Friend!

  1. Encourage and support players and tournament officials with a positive and friendly attitude.
  2. Get involved with your son or daughter's team in a positive way.
  3. Treat everyone fairly within the context of his or her role in the activity, regardless of gender, place of origin, race, and sexual orientation.
  4. Don’t lose perspective; emphasize the values associated with the game.
  5. Respect referees’ calls and provide positive support during games.
  6. Be supportive and don’t let expectations become a burden to your son or daughter.
  7. Do not “scream or holler” at officials and players during the game as the coach lead by example in dedication to good sportsmanship and fair play.
  8. Model respectful behavior for your son or daughter.
  9. Keep lines of communication OPEN between players, parents, and the direction of the Kingston International Youth Hockey Festival.

  10.  Discuss your son/daughter team concerns with team staff in a responsible, respectful and open-minded manner.

  11. Be responsible for your child as parent/tutor at all times while attending this Hockey festival. Remember that they are looking to you for guidance.

  12. As a coach or team manager, be responsible for the safety and health of the players while playing the game during the entire tournament, and also be responsible for the players while being in the dressing room, Any physical damage to the dressing room will be charged to the team concerned.

  13. Make safety, respect, fair play and fun a priority.

  14. Be a partner with the Direction of the Kingston International Youth Hockey Festival to build a solid foundation for future character development for your son/daughter through hockey competition. We are there for your kids.

  15. Support your child emotionally.

  16. Be responsible for your child playing in this tournament and make sure that all hockey equipment is under surveillance at all times as we are not responsible for hockey equipment being stolen!

  17. Refrain from drinking alcohol or performing other inappropriate behavior while in the presence of minor-aged players.

  18. Encourage your child to participate but avoid pressuring them to play the game.

  19. Treat all players fairly and equally. This does not mean equal playing time. It means that
  • each player is as important as the next to the coach and will be helped to improve their skills

  • in "game situations", all players will be treated fairly so that each player shall be given ample opportunity to contribute during each tournament

  • in the case of misconduct the discipline will be based solely on the act and not on the player’s ability

  1. Finally, let’s remember that each game is for our young people, and win or lose; it’s a stride in life for them.

Any major misconduct in violation of this code of ethics during this hockey festival could enforce a suspension of the parties in default.

The direction of the Kingston International Youth Hockey/Sports Festival encourage managers and coaches to read the Code of Conduct outlined by the Canadian Professional Coaches Association, or The American Hockey Coaches Association

See this diagram that summarizes Parents' Code of Conduct.

Thanks for your understanding and collaboration.
